Over the weekend the Houston Hurricanes went across town to local rivals Regals SCA. The opening game for the Hurricanes was to be a bitter sweet evening in Maya Park. The Hurricanes hit the ground running right from the kickoff with the midfield driving at the heart of the Regals defense, which resulted in them conceding an early corner. The Hurricanes drew first blood just six minutes in with Declan Brennan towering above the Regals defense, getting his head on the end of a great corner kick from Carlos Picado.

As the game carried on the Hurricanes had the majority of possession and by far the most chances of the half. It was looking like it was going to be long day for the Regals with the Hurricanes creating chance after chance in front of goal, but squandering their opportunities to take a further lead.

The pressure from the Hurricanes continued throughout the first half until the 37th minute when a fast break was carried up the field and slotted home by Regals striker Abel due to a poor stop that was parried by the Hurricanes keeper.

The second half started off the same way the first did with the Hurricanes applying the pressure to Regals defense once again. On the 65th minute the Hurricanes thought they extended their lead thanks to Brian Okpala, but the festivities were stopped by the linesman. This also happened just 15 minutes later with another disallowed goal. These decisions turned out to be the reason the Hurricanes came away from Maya Park without all three points. The Hurricanes look forward to their next tough challenge on Friday evening against the Liverpool Warriors.

The Houston Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) are proud to announce the signing of two Irish players: defender Declan Brennan and midfielder Sam Cassidy.

Even though both began their collegiate careers at Genesee Community College, they bring a wealth of playing experience to the NPSL. Brennan and Cassidy both played for League of Ireland teams, Brennan with the Bohemian Football Club and Cassidy with Cork City.

Brennan even played for the Bohemian FC first team when they faced Glasgow Celtic FC, one of the giants of European soccer.

The Hurricanes’ leadership is excited to have such players join their side.

“It was important for our owner to have a couple of Irish boys in the team,” Head Coach Thiago Reis commented. “I look forward to working with them and seeing what they will add to our team.”

The Hurricanes head to New Orleans on Saturday, May 11th to face the Jesters in what looks to be the start of a rivalry that will last for years to come.

On Wednesday night the Houston Dutch Lions FC USL PDL team traveled to Dow Park in Deer Park, TX to take on the Houston Hurricanes FC of the NPSL in the Lions’ third exhibition match of the season.

The match would be a physical match full of opportunities for both sides, but it was HDL that struck first.

At the start of the second half, the Lions forced a corner and midfielder Jose Alvarez swung a high kick into the box. Defender Walter Kromholz was able to use his height and send a solid header into the top right corner to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

But the lead was short-lived as the Hurricanes broke through in the 88th minute. After a quick break down the left sideline, the Hurricanes were able to feed the ball into the box and put the ball past HDL keeper Dylan Meeker with a slick header.

“I am not to disappointed with the result, just a little upset we didn’t take the chances we created,” Hurricanes Head Coach Thiago Reis stated. “We need to finish better.”

The match ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, but the Hurricanes felt they had the advantage.

“I am happy with the result as we scored in the 85th minute,” Hurricanes President Brendan Keyes commented. “We dominated the game and really should have won by two goals or more.”

“I have been involved in soccer in Houston for over 25 years and this is the biggest deal I have ever done in futbol and with the Hurricanes,” Hurricanes President Brendan Keyes stated. “It’s a great way to start our first season with such a prestigious TV network as MUNDOFOX Houston.”

The MUNDOFOX Houston logo will be featured on the front of the Hurricanes’ home jerseys, while the network will promote matches with highlights, commercials, and player profiles.

“This synergy will be a great opportunity for both parties to work together and unite the thousands of soccer fans to an even more intimate and personal setting while playing at Lutheran South Academy,” MUNDOFOX Houston General Sales Manager Javier Chavez commented.

“MUNDOFOX Houston is also new to the marketplace and we have a lot to prove similarly to the Hurricanes, to this great Houston community of fans and viewers,” Chavez added. “In partnering with community leaders, together we will bring positive energy into our homes.”

MUNDOFOX was launched across the United States in August 2012 and is part of the FOX family of networks.

MUNDOFOX Houston and the Hurricanes were brought together by the hard work of Houston sports guru Danny Gonzalez, who has appeared on various networks as a play-by-play announcer and news anchor for over 20 years. His talent and knowledge of the Houston market brought Keyes and Chavez together to both make a positive impact to fans and viewers in Houston.
